Chicago PD Season 12 Episode 21 Recap: Open Casket

It’s another high-intensity hour of Chicago PD that had us glued to the screens.

Chapman wakes up on Voight’s couch. She fell asleep looking at paperwork as they’re still trying to take down Reid. They talk about how he still uses Camille’s Bach music as an alarm when he comes down. She looks at all the photos of people he lost and asks him if he misses them, and how he used to be happy. He says he doesn’t notice anymore.

Capman gets a text from a fellow officer she looped in, who brings her and Voight to a CI. The CI talks about working at Otero’s funeral home and seeing people move stuff. He wants to avoid prison for cooperating.

Burzek stakes out a church where a funeral occurs, and Torres is inside pretending to be a patron. He looks uncomfortable in church and is potentially still struggling with some things. When he goes up to view the body, the lighting changes, and he seems to imagine Gloria, perhaps?

He snaps out of it and goes to the bathroom, waiting for Ruzek and Burgess to give him the okay to start investigating since everyone left the building. He puts a camera in the morgue but then has to hide in the fridge with bodies when Otero comes in to grab paperwork and leaves.

Torres almost has another close call, but finally gets out of there.

They watch things all night, but they haven’t found anything about Otero moving products. They shut some things down when Trudy tells him that Reid is there to see him.

Reid expresses frustration that Burgess missed the roll call and that the intelligence numbers for solving cases are down. He is trying to feel Voight out and feels like he’s pulling teeth out of him. He tells him to get his numbers back up and that it’s starting to feel like he bet on the wrong horse.

Burgess and Atwater are working the night shift together at the funeral home. They see a person come into the funeral home, who appears to be stealing supplies.

They call it into Voight, who says not to bring the guy in, just keep tailing him. The car is registered to a woman named Lisa. They realize they’re on the block where Otero lives, and the person approaches Otero’s house.

When the person pulls their hoodie down, they see that Otero’s son is the person who just stole from his father.

They talk over the news with most of the team and Chapman. They think they can use this to flip Otero since he’s been trying to keep his son clean.

Ruzek goes undercover, scoring from Otero’s son, Renny. Voight and Burgess roll up on Renny when he makes the deal, and he takes off running and starts shooting at Burgess. Atwater stops him with the car.

They take Renny to an FBI safe house and lay on him, threatening prison if he doesn’t talk, but it doesn’t work, and he still refuses.

Voight waits for Otero at his house.

He scares him and draws his weapon on Voight when he sees him. Voight tells him they have his son and that he’s a police officer. They show a video of Renny selling drugs, and he tells them that Renny evaded arrest and shot at police.

When Voight mentions that Reid is protecting him, Otero says he knows he’s Voight. Voight tells Otero that Renny could go away for 30 years, or he can walk if Otero helps him.

Otero: What do you want?

Voight: I want Reid.

Otero says he heard the stories about Voight, and if he’s anything like Reid, he needs proof that Renny is still alive. Voight makes the call, and Ruzek puts Renny on the phone. He cries and apologizes to his father, and it makes Otero emotional. He swears he’ll fix it.

Otero suggests that Reid fix this instead of wiping Voight off the map. But Voight reminds Otero that he can’t really trust Reid, and he knows that. He wants Voight to put it in writing, but Voight says they’re past that, and Otero has to trust him.

Otero shares that Reid keeps the police off his back, they communicate through burners, and that Reid ordered the hit on the one kid who was going to turn him in.

Otero shares that Reid isn’t normal. He says that Reid likes him because he owns him and keeps emphasizing that Reid isn’t right, maybe suggesting he’s not right in the head.

Otero says that his son isn’t like either of them and is a good kid. Clearly, he’s protecting him. Voight leaves.

The next day, when Otero is meeting up with others in the morgue, hooded men with black masks over their faces rob Otero and take all the drugs and stuff. They leave, jump in a car, take off, and peel back their masks. It’s Atwater and Ruzek.

Otero meets up with Reid to tell him that some random guys ripped him off, and he doesn’t know who they are. They took 750K. Voight and Torres stake out from a distance and watch the exchange.

Reid listens and doesn’t say much. They can’t tell if he buys it at first. He leaves and tells Otero to stay safe, but then Trudy updates Voight later and says that Reid roped in his fishing buddy to handle the rip situation based on the names of suspects Otero threw out there.

Ruzek and Atwater are paired up to watch when a tagged vehicle shows up at the bait house. Torres and Burgess are in the car and say that the vehicle doesn’t head there. She calls Voight and says that it’s really quiet.

They can tell that it has been too quiet. Chapman and Voight talk about it when Voight leaves. He pulls out his laptop and watches the video of the rip again. The guy Otero was with when Ruzek and Atwater ripped them off texted someone.

VSoight figures out that Reid had Silva, Otero’s secondhand, in his pocket and that they’re made. He tells everyone to get back to the district.

He heads to Otero’s house, and someone ransacked it; there’s blood everywhere, and Otero and his son are gone.

They’re able to figure out that a white van took Otero, and they get hits on the van leading to a meth house. The four and Voight searched the area, and they cleared everything except Voight. He finds disturbed earth and blood. Ruzek and Atwater dig until they hit a foot.

Everyone uses their hands to move the rest of the dirt and find Otero’s body. Voight has to call it in.

The next day, Reid comes into the bullpen with other cops. He reads Torres his rights and arrests him for his misconduct with Gloria. He then goes to Burgess and strips her of her duties. She has to hand in her badge. Reid then disbands Intelligence.

Voight looks at his paperwork at home. He’s livid and seemingly checking back into who he used to be. Chapman knocks on his door and tries to talk to him through it, but he ignores her.

He looks in the mirror, and it’s clear he’s not interested in her helping him walk a certain line. He wants revenge.
